Heard Today

Sometimes you hear things....and they are memorable. Well, today I heard 3 things that caught my ear, and remembered 1 more:

"puddle pirates" - what the Navy calls the Coast Guard

"I don't eat fried poodle fajitas" - a way to say that you don't hate dogs

"unclear medicine" - what the other medical disciplines call nuclear medicine (where they do MRIs and PET scans)

"I lost myself" - a literal translation from Spanish of "I don't understand what you're saying"

I just love language!

Halo Shoes

Just returned from Portland with a pair of these! Camilla Skovgaard stiletto t-strap sandals that fit like a shoe thanks to the strap over your ankle/high instep. Fun design and....they were on sale.

How did I find them? Someone also "into" shoes gave me her own exquisitely attuned recommendations for where to hunt great shoes. Halo was on the list. The staff were fashionista saavy consultants. The store carries a wide variety of unique designs all made of quality materials sturdily constructed...quite necessary for stilettos in particular.

I'll tame these down for work with a pencil skirt and a crisp white shirt (a la Katherine Hepburn). A chunky necklase would do wonders but will have to wait and pearls will do great. For evening wear, Halle Berry shows you what the right black dress would do for these shoes.

These sunflowers stopped me in my tracks like Moses and the burning bush. When I got home and looked at the image SOOC (Straight Out Of Camera) on the left it seemed close enough.

But, I decided to try Pioneer Woman's photoshop tutorial on it to see if I could get the image to give more of the actual experience of awe and amazement.

Women Don't Ask

Even though I'm only 30 pages into it, Women Don't Ask makes perfect sense after having read (and blogged about) Appetites. If, as Appetites draws out, women find wanting threatening in the first place, then it makes sense that we don't ask for what we want.

If you're not comfortable with your want in the first place, why on earth would you actually ask for it? Seriously!

Serendipitously, in the pages of Jesus, CEO, I read: Jesus "encouraged people to ask for things and to be specific in their requests." (187) When I looked up the reference to Matthew 7:7 which starts "Ask and it will be given to you...." and followed the teensy footnote letter n, I found 9 other instances reinforcing the same thing. Probably not an offer to be the Cosmic Vending Machine but a real offer to take seriously our specific asks and definitely support for asking as a practice.

While I'm not far along in Women, I've gotten enough to give myself the challenge of asking for at least one thing that I wouldn't have before, every day. Here's my "start small" example:

At a pub lunch in Mountain View, I liked the Fat Tire label but was hesitant to order it for fear I'd end up with an entire pint of something I didn't like. Ordinarily, I'd just go for a sure thing instead, but I was curious. I asked the waitress for a taste. She wrinkled up her heretofore smooth nose and forehead and said, "I'm not sure we do that....I've never heard of that.....but I'll check." She came back smiling with a teensy taste which was enough for me to decide I'd prefer a Guinness. A win for the day.

Appetites: Why Women Want

I have put off even buying this book let alone reading it for several years, worried about what I might find between the boards, about how I would feel about what was revealed. But I was spurred on to take a draught of courage by a recent conversation comparing women's magazines. Martha Stewart's Living seems to be about women doing. Oprah Winfrey's O seems to be about women being. Where's the magazine about women wanting? Several were discussed, including Cosmo, and all discarded.

Appetites is truly a book about what women want but with a bonus. Along the way Caroline Knapp also spelunks what's threatening about wanting and in the exposure helps untangle the double binds that creep around the joy of being alive.

Smell Brand

More and more stores are considering aroma as part of merchandising and or brand. For example, near Anthropologie in Portland, 1/2 a block away, the first thing I noticed was the aroma, notes of sweet almond and subtle notes of patchouli that were stronger in the store but still not overwhelming.

Smell can be a way to leave a lasting perhaps compelling impression, one you can use in your favor to send a message. There are obvious applications for wooing. Some possible ways to smell

Sweet - generally inoffensive
Expensive - complex, unusual, arousing curiousity, intriguing
Simple - either deceptively so or purposefully, one note at all times
Don Juan - Polo on men with certain skin types that have more oil

There are hundreds of descriptors and even more perfumes. What aroma fits your brand, budget, purpose and context?
